Which side of the fence do you want to look at?

A wood fence has a smooth picket face on one side. The other side shows the posts and the horizontal rails that hold it up. Someone has to look at that side. Your city doesn't require a direction, so it's your call.

Smooth side faces out — the street and your neighbors see the finished fence; you see the posts and rails. Most people pick this, and some cities require it. Smooth side faces my yard — you see the finished fence; the posts and rails face the street/neighbors. Finished on both sides — board-on-board, no rails showing either way. Costs more, and nobody gets the "bad" side.
